Eton x Maggie Gyllenhaal: Reimagining the Shirt

Eton’s latest campaign poses a bold question — and finds its answer in Maggie Gyllenhaal. Award-winning actor and director, and now the brand’s first female ambassador, she redefines what an icon of menswear can mean when filtered through her own creative lens.

A Force of Culture and Style

Gyllenhaal has always been more than her roles. Known for fearless performances, for example The Deuce and her directorial debut The Lost Daughter, she balances intellect with artistry in distinctly modern ways. Off-screen, her wit and understated style have made her a figure of cultural influence — a woman whose fashion choices are thoughtful, effortless, and never predictable.

As she puts it: “Classic shirting is just part of something that I wear, and that I like to wear, all the time.”

A Shirt Made Personal

Her collaboration with Eton is built on the brand’s Custom Made service, where every detail of a shirt can be defined by the wearer. For Gyllenhaal, the process became both playful and precise — an extension of her artistry.

She chose three designs that bring nuance to timeless forms available as pre-selects using the Eton Custom Made tool:
A black Signature Twill shirt in a contemporary fit with a sharp white long pointed collar and black double button cuffs — the first time Eton Custom Made has introduced a contrast collar option.

A white Elevated Twill shirt with long pointed collar and double button cuffs, clean-lined and precise.

A vertical stripe shirt with long pointed collar and single button cuffs — now available as a preset in the Custom Made tool.

“I like my shirts to be a bit oversized. I also like when they’re soft enough, or thin enough in the fabric, that you can still see your body underneath or at least feel your body underneath the shirt.”

Through the Lens of Gray Sorrenti

Photographed by Gray Sorrenti, one of fashion’s most compelling young image-makers, the campaign captures Gyllenhaal with raw intimacy. The images are thoughtful, unapologetic, and undeniably hers — showing how Eton’s craft becomes a canvas for individuality.

Reframing an Icon

The white shirt has long symbolized tradition and authority in menswear. With Gyllenhaal, it takes on new meaning: gender-neutral, expressive, and deeply personal.

“A men’s shirt—like the ones Eton makes—that feel gender-neutral to me. Shirts that can be worn by anyone really and mean all sorts of different things.”

In her words, “Lately, a men’s shirt expresses how I feel and complements how I want to operate.”

Beyond Categories

This collaboration speaks to a broader cultural truth: personal style transcends gender.

“I think anyone can wear whatever they want, and I always have. In some ways, it’s gotten easier and more open. In other ways, the world right now feels much more closed off. But, fundamentally, I believe in wearing what feels right to you.”

Eton’s Custom Made service embodies that freedom. By inviting the wearer to shape every detail, it turns the shirt into more than a garment — it becomes an act of self-expression.

Style as Expression

For Gyllenhaal, getting dressed is part of the creative act. “I think the most vulnerable and honest thing an actor can do is try to look as good as they can. Not from their perspective—but from the character’s.”

That same principle applies to her style: subtle choices that tell a story. With Eton, the shirt becomes the starting point — exacting, expressive, unmistakably personal.
